Minnesota joined the United States as a Union State in 1858, three short years before the start of the Civil War. Volunteering troops immediately, Minnesota has deep and meaningful connections with places like Gettysburg & Antietam, but what of Black experiences for rural Minnesotans at the time? Join the Runestone Museum, who maintains a replica Civil War era Fort, to discuss these Black Experiences in Minnesota during the Civil War. Join us online! Through letters and journal entries, journey back to the 1860s with new wife and new mother, Clara Kinkead as she travels from Delaware to Alexandria to join her new husband, Robert Kinkead (brother to William and Alexander). Listen to the nineteen year olds’ experiences and learn about her troubles and her bravery as she faced difficult and dangerous situations.
