Disc Golf (Ages 8 and Up)
Disc golf is a sport for all ages and fitness levels, can be played just about anywhere and is a great way to get outside and be active. In this course you will learn about how to properly throw a disc golf disc, the rules of the game and the equipment that is used to play. Instructor Brian Walli started teaching disc golf as a student at the University of Minnesota and has been competing in tournaments across the country at a professional level for over 10 years. Fencing (Gr. 2-8)
New and returning students invited! Youth Enrichment League (YEL) fencing has evolved. Olympic Coach Ro Sobalvarro now heads up YEL’s curriculum, instructor training and tournament consultation. Coach Sobalvarro brings with him an immense knowledge of youth, national and international fencing. We keep it fun, too! Your favorite instructors return with more knowledge, refined coaching skills and, of course, your favorite fencing games and arm bands. Safety is our first priority. Dino Diggers (Ages 3-5)
Learn about dinosaurs and other fossils as you work as paleontologists looking for fossils. Hear stories and create art projects that deal with different dinosaurs as you test your identification skills. Engage in mini-dinosaur dig site as you get to use tools to uncover real dinosaur fossils. Adult must accompany child at no additional charge. We will start out in the Program Center and then move to the dig site.
Prairie Fire Children's Theatre - Robin Hood (Gr. 3-12)
Prairie Fire Children's Theatre and Alexandria Public Schools, Community Education presents "Robin Hood"! Nationally known, quality theatre Directors from Prairie Fire Children's Theatre of Barrett, MN, will lead the week's practices and performances. Auditions are Monday, July 17 at 12:15pm. Auditions will last approximately two hours and rehearsal schedules will be distributed at that time. Rehearsals begin, for a portion of the cast, on Monday after auditions and will continue according to the schedule on Tuesday-Friday from 12:15pm - 4:30pm. Depending on your child's part, they may not need to stay the whole day so have a ride ready for them if they can leave after the two hours of auditions on Monday.Please bring a snack for break time and bring food for Friday's break time after rehearsal. Performances are Friday, July 21 at the Discovery Middle School Auditorium. Stay tuned for more details of performance times!
Rising Stars - Christmas In July (Gr. 3-7)
SING! DANCE! ACT! The Rising Stars summer performance program has been a vital and exciting part of our community education line-up for many years. Quality instructors and experienced mentors will assure that students will build skills for stage performance. Students will share the stage with other talented students in a singing, acting and dancing extravaganza! This year’s theme is "Christmas In July”! "Christmas In July" is also known as Yule fest or Yuletide in Australia. July is generally the coldest month of winter, so celebrations emulate the atmosphere of the northern hemisphere winter. That means, our theme will also be "Australian". The Rising Stars experience concludes with a public performance on the evening of Friday, July 28 at the Discovery Middle School Auditorium. PLUS each student will receive a t-shirt!Instructors: Steve Deitz is the Vocal Music Director at Alexandria Area High School; Rachel Capistrant has been Drama Instructor for the Rising Stars Program in previous years, and AAHS Dance Team Coach, Christine Reilly, will lead the dancing.
