ACT Test Prep Course (Gr. 10-12)EnrichmentTo help prepare for ACT testing, we are offering this intensive test preparation workshop that coaches high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to do their best on the ACT. In the five-hour ZAPS seminar, students will learn strategies for using partial knowledge to eliminate wrong choices, gain tips for improving in all four sub-tests: English, Math, Reading, Science; understand the most strategic ways to use limited testing time, take shortened practice tests that mirror the actual testing experience, reduce their test anxiety and gain confidence. Students receive a comprehensive study guide and 24 practice test workouts with detailed answer explanations. Students will also get suggestions for individualized study in the days leading up to the test. Gymnasts will continue to gain strength and confidence while improving key gymnastics shapes and basic skills necessary for more advanced gymnastics. More emphasis will be placed on precision and mastery of key shapes and on presentation. More dance elements will begin to be implemented at this level. Easter Egg HuntRecreationJoin Community Education for an Easter Egg Hunt at Woodland Elementary School on Saturday April 1st at 1 pm. Prairie Fire Children's Theatre - Wizard of Oz (Gr. 3-10)EnrichmentPrairie Fire Children's Theatre and Alexandria Public Schools, Community Education presents "Wizard of Oz"! Nationally known, quality theatre Directors from Prairie Fire Children's Theatre of Barrett, MN, will lead the week's practices and performances. Auditions are Monday, July 17 at 12:15 pm. Auditions will last approximately two hours and rehearsal schedules will be distributed at that time. Rehearsals begin, for a portion of the cast, on Monday after auditions and will continue according to the schedule on Tuesday-Friday from 12:15-4:30 pm. Depending on your child's part, they may not need to stay the whole time on Monday, so have a ride ready for them if they can leave after the two hours of auditions. School of Fish (Gr. 3-12)EnrichmentSchool of Fish is a 2 1/2-hour kids fishing class open to kids (and adults!) from grades 3 and up taught by pro angler and fishing TV show host Mike Frisch. Students learn about lakes, finding fish in those lakes, and some great ways to catch them. They also learn to tie a fishing knot and rig and use a slip-bobber setup. Spring Advanced 5/6 Swim LessonAquaticsWaitlistADVANCED 5 Prerequisites: Successful completion of Intermediate 4 and/or demonstration of all Intermediate 4 completion requirements on the first day of lessons. Advanced 5 refines coordination of Intermediate 3 and 4 skills and increases endurance by treading water for longer as well as swimming farther distances. Swimmers will learn the following: * Rotary breathing * Flutter kick (on front and back) in streamline position for 25 yards * Breaststroke kick (on front) for 25 yards * Dolphin kick for 25 yards * Scissors kick on side for 25 yards * Freestyle (with rotary breathing) for 50 yards * Backstroke for 50 yards * Elementary backstroke for 50 yards * Breaststroke for 25 yards * Sidestroke for 25 yards * Butterfly for 15 yards * Freestyle and backstroke open turns * Treading water (in deep water) for 2 minutes * Shallow dive * Head-first surface dive to retrieve a submerged object in deep water (approx. 7 feet) * 4-minute swim utilizing any of the six strokes * Front float (survival float), face in water, for 2 minutes * Back float, ears in water, for 2 minutes * Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR * Learn basic safety guidelines/risks at pools, waterparks and waterfronts Advanced 6 (A6) ADVANCED 6 Prerequisites: Successful completion of Advanced 5 and/or demonstration of all Advanced 5 completion requirements on the first day of lessons. Advanced 6 polishes strokes to allow swimming with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Swimmers will be introduced to more advanced stroke technique and will be required to demonstrate proper and efficient body position and movement for each stroke, as well as competitive swimming skills such as flip turns, proper finishes, starts and utilizing a pace clock.
