This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This course is designed for students with no or minimal sign language skills to develop basic skills in use of ASL and knowledge of Deaf culture. Emphasis is upon acquisition of comprehension, production and interactional skills using basic grammatical features. ASL will be taught within contexts and related to general surroundings and everyday life experiences. The only requirements for kids to attend are that they are able to read and be accompanied by a parent/adult.
Paula is an native ASL signer who is deaf and has resided in Alexandria for the last six years with her husband,her daughters, dogs and a kitten. She has had experience teaching American Sign Language classes and currently is a Deaf Mentor with Lutheran Social Services. Paula also works for the Alexandria school district as an American Sign Language Facilitator. She looks forward to sharing ASL with the community and spreading awareness about deaf culture.
Kimmy is an ASL Interpreter who has been signing for 10+ years . Though she is new to the Alex area, she is not new to signing or helping others learn ASL. With multiple years assisting with the High School ASL Classes in Bemidji, along with interpreting in different fields (community and education) this has truly become a passion for her. Currently, Kimmy works as an ASL Interpreter for Alexandria Public Schools.
