ACT Test Prep Course (Gr. 10-12)Students 10th - 12th GradeTo help prepare for ACT testing, we are offering this intensive test preparation workshop coaches high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to do their best on the ACT. In the five-hour ZAPS seminar, students will learn strategies for using partial knowledge to eliminate wrong choices, gain tips for improving in all four sub-tests: English, Math, Reading, Science; understand the most strategic ways to use limited testing time, take shortened practice tests that mirror the actual testing experience, reduce their test anxiety and gain confidence. Students receive a comprehensive study guide and 24 practice test workouts with detailed answer explanations. Students will also get suggestions for individualized study in the days leading up to the test. American Red Cross Lifeguarding CourseAquaticsThis course is set up to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for them until EMS can take over. The blended learning format allows the student to work independently on theory utilizing a series of informational videos and tutorials, and then combines that online knowledge acquisition with in-person water, First Aid and CPR/AED hands-on skills training. Cost includes participant materials and supplies. This course requires participants to complete online learning prior to in-class skills sessions. Please make sure to provide a valid email address for the course participant when completing the registration, as the web-based learning segment will be assigned via the email provided. Course Prerequisites: 1. Must be 15 years old on or before the final day of the course 2. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed 3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs 4. Complete the following events in 1 minute 40 seconds: - Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Face may be in or out of the water. - Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. - Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. - Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Participants MUST pass the prerequisite swimming skills test in order to progress through the classroom portion of the course - participants will NOT be allowed to continue or be certified even if they have completed the online portion and NO refund will be issued.Youth Summer 2020 - Spring 2021

Crafting Ceramic Garden Gnomes (Gr. 6-8)ArtsMiddle school students will learn the silly and interesting history of Gnomes in European and American Culture, and then learn how to craft their own adorable gnome using white earthenware clay. In the first class, the gnome will be hand built. The gnomes will need one week to dry and be fired in a kiln – and finally, on week two, the gnomes will be painted and sent to live in their new home. Gnomes are known as symbols of good luck. Originally, gnomes were thought to provide protection, especially of buried treasure and minerals in the ground. They are still used today to watch over crops and livestock, often tucked into the rafters of a barn or placed in the garden.Youth Summer 2020 - Spring 2021

Starting SoonOpen SwimAquaticsFor the safety of our guests, swimmers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) in the water, and be within an arm's reach at all times. Maximum of three children per in-water adult supervisor. Children 13 and older must have an adult present on deck. Children who are not potty trained are required to wear a swim diaper. Community Education does NOT have swim diapers available for purchase. Only U.S. Coast Guard approved flotation devices are allowed in the pool, and must be less than six feet in dimension. Flotation devices are allowed in the shallow end only. Children must remain within an arm's reach of an adult if they are utilizing them. Shallow Water Requirements: 1. Any child under 12 that wants to swim outside of an arm's reach of their supervising adult in the shallow end must wear a U.S. coast Guard approved life jacket OR pass the swim test. Deep Water Requirements: 1. Any child under 12 that wants to swim in the deep end must take the swim test.
